What Is Dental Socket Preservation?
Socket preservation is a procedure performed after tooth extraction to preserve the bone structure and minimize the risk of bone loss and deformities in the jaw. When teeth are removed due to decay, infection, or fracture, the surrounding bone can shrink and recede quickly, resulting in an unsightly appearance and difficulties with future restorative treatments such as dental implants, bridges, or dentures. At North Mississippi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, our team of oral and maxillofacial surgeons offers socket preservation after tooth extraction to help maintain the shape of your jaw and enhance the success of any future dental work. Contact one of our locations in Tupelo, Corinth, Southaven, or Oxford, MS to schedule a consultation to learn more.
How Is Socket Preservation Performed?
Socket preservation is typically performed immediately following tooth extraction. After the tooth is removed, the socket is filled with bone graft material or a bone substitute. The socket is then covered with a membrane or tissue to protect the graft and encourage natural healing. This process helps to prevent the collapse of the gums and facial tissues while stimulating bone growth in the socket. The new bone provides a solid foundation for dental implants or other restorative procedures. This simple and effective procedure can be a crucial step in ensuring a smooth recovery and successful dental restoration.
What Are the Benefits of Socket Preservation?
Socket preservation helps maintain the shape of the jaw and gums, ensuring better outcomes for future restorations. Benefits include:
- Prevents bone loss and jaw deformities
- Promotes better healing after extraction
- Provides a stable foundation for dental implants
- Minimizes gum and tissue shrinkage
- Enhances the appearance of your smile
North Mississippi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates Reviews
My experience was very good. I appreciate the knowledge, understanding and concern staff shows
I had a great experience with this dentist office. My son had to get his wisdom teeth out. I was a little nervous at first for getting all four of them out but the staff here were very friendly and helpful. They explained step by step and they made sure I understand everything. I’m grateful that I brought my son here. So now I’m thinking I need to get two of my teeth removed at this office. This dentist is highly recommended.
Everyone was caring and very nice.
Dr Bauer and his staff are amazing! I highly recommend this place for oral extraction. I have had to have it twice and both times I have come out of it without pain and easy heal with no problems.
Everything went well and they were very quick to get out and back home.

Am I A Candidate For Socket Preservation?
Ideal candidates for socket preservation are individuals who have had a tooth extracted and are planning to replace it with a dental implant, bridge, or denture in the future. The procedure is especially beneficial for patients who may not be ready for an implant immediately after extraction. Patients with a history of bone loss or those who have had teeth extracted due to severe periodontal disease may also be excellent candidates. A consultation with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon at North Mississippi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery can help determine if this procedure is the right choice for your specific situation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is socket preservation painful?
Socket preservation is typically performed under local anesthesia or sedation, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. Afterward, mild discomfort or swelling may occur, but it can be managed with prescribed pain medication and proper care. Most patients find the recovery process to be smooth and manageable.
How do I care for my mouth after a socket preservation procedure?
You should follow our post-care instructions, which typically include avoiding hard or sticky foods and practicing good oral hygiene. Over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers can help manage discomfort during recovery. Regular follow-ups at North Mississippi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates will ensure the area heals properly and is ready for the next steps.
Are there risks or complications associated with socket preservation?
Socket preservation is a safe and commonly performed procedure, but like any surgical treatment, there is a small risk of infection or graft rejection. Choosing a skilled oral surgeon and following post-operative care instructions can minimize these risks. Our team members in Tupelo, Corinth, or Southaven, MS, will discuss any potential concerns beforehand.
