What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry at North Mississippi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates is designed to help patients feel relaxed and experience less discomfort during dental procedures. By using advanced anesthesia techniques, sedation dentistry ensures a comfortable and less stressful experience, particularly for those with dental anxiety or undergoing complex treatments. The anesthesia options offered at our offices may include local anesthesia, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), IV sedation, and general anesthesia, which allow our team to tailor sedation to each patient’s needs for optimal comfort and care. For more information on dental sedation options, contact one of our locations in Corinth, Tupelo, Southaven, or Oxford, MS.
How Does Anesthesia Work?
Your procedure may look different depending on what anesthesia option is used. The anesthesia options we offer include:
-
Local Anesthesia: This involves administering a local anesthetic, such as lidocaine, directly to the surgical area, allowing you to remain fully conscious while eliminating pain in the targeted region. Known as "twilight sedation," t's commonly used for minor soft tissue procedures and simple tooth extractions.
-
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): Delivered through a nasal mask, nitrous oxide induces a calm and relaxed state, making it easier for patients to undergo procedures without anxiety or discomfort.
-
Office-Based General Anesthesia: This method involves administering IV medications to render the patient completely unconscious, ensuring they remain unaware and pain-free during extensive oral surgeries.
Each anesthesia method is selected based on the specific procedure and the patient's comfort level, ensuring a tailored and safe experience. In some cases, nitrous oxide or general anesthesia could be combined with local anesthetic.

Anesthesia Reviews
I definitely recommend going here if you are needing your wisdom teeth removed or any other oral surgery! I was scared for days worrying about the anesthesia and I was so nervous of not waking up but everyone there was so kind and eased my nerves about it. You have people monitoring you 24/7 while you are under and making sure you are comfortable and breathing normally. My healing process was a breeze and I was able to eat normal in the next week! Might I also add that I was able to do a consultation in the same day as my surgery which was very easy to go through and fast!
Dr. Bauer did a phenomenal job, as well as my nurse. I forgot her name because I was under anesthesia, but she was amazing. She had shorter blonde hair and was from Mooreville. I was very scared because I haven’t had many dental issues or been put to sleep. They made me feel normal, did everything to make me feel comfortable, and safe. Answered all of my questions. Got me an appointment within a week of consult, and I have had zero pain or issues because I followed the after care instructions. Not even any pain the day of surgery or the day after. Just pressure. I really expected to be in pain when my medication wore off, but I’m 9 days out and not a single stitch of pain. Wonderful doctor. I know his skills had something to do with that. Thank you for making me feel safe to do things in the future. I won’t be afraid.
Dr. West was awesome!! Super kind and understanding about my fear of surgery, medicine, and anesthesia. Explained everything well. Definitely recommend him and his nurses!
Had all teeth pulled under sedation. From the first visit till the last checkup everything went well everyone was very professional and calmed all my fears I would highly recommend them
Best surgical experience I’ve ever witnessed, hands down ! Super friendly/welcoming and thorough staff. My husband had his wisdom teeth removed and was super anxious because he had not been under anesthesia since being a small child, not to mention his fear of Dentist. Within a minute of talking to the surgeon and the nurses, his whole demeanor changed, and his mind was put at ease. The operation was super fast and healed beautifully. 11/10 Recommend.

Am I A Candidate For Anesthesia?
Sedation dentistry is an ideal solution for a wide range of patients, particularly those who struggle with dental anxiety or a strong gag reflex that makes traditional treatment difficult. It is also highly beneficial for individuals undergoing invasive or lengthy procedures, such as wisdom tooth removal or dental implant placement. Patients with sensitive teeth or those who have had traumatic dental experiences in the past often find that sedation allows them to receive necessary oral care without stress. During your initial consultation at North Mississippi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, our surgeons will review your medical history and discuss your comfort goals to determine which sedation level is safest and most effective for your needs.
